If you're having issues purchasing an item using iDeal as a payment method, you may have to sign out of your account and sign back in.
When processing a SEPA Direct Debit payment, Rakuten Kobo is required to send you a debit notification email. If you do not have an email address associated with iDeal, Rakuten Kobo will not be able to complete your checkout process.
To continue to pay using iDeal, you'll need to sign out of your account and then sign back in to link your partner account with Rakuten Kobo.
Note for iDeal customers:
- If you see a 0.01 € charge on your credit card, you will be refunded the amount within 2-3 business days. This charge is used to verify your credit card. Learn more here: Extra charges on your credit card statement.
- After you check out, you'll receive an email from SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area). The email will have a title similar to "Debit initiated by Rakuten Kobo". With SEPA, you can make cashless euro payments via credit transfer and direct debit. To learn more about SEPA, visit: https://www.ecb.europa.eu/paym/integration/retail/sepa/html/index.nl.html
Sign out of your account and sign back in
To sign out of your account:
- Go to Kobo.com.
- Hover your mouse cursor over My Account.

Click Sign out.
After you've signed out, sign back into your account:
- Click Sign in near the the top-right corner of the screen.
- Sign in to your Kobo account by doing one of the following:
- Enter your account credentials and click Sign in or;
- Click More sign-in options and select the partner account that you'd like to use to sign in.
- Enter your account credentials and click Sign in or;
- Follow the onscreen steps to sign in to your account.

After signing in, you'll see a 'An account exists with this email' message. Follow the onscreen steps to link your accounts and sign in.
After you link your accounts, you'll be able to to purchase books using iDEAL as a payment method.
Note: If you do not own the account that you have been prompted to link to, you will see a Skip button. Follow the steps below to add Rakuten Kobo to your partner account.
Add Rakuten Kobo to your partner account
If signing out of your account and signing back in didn't fix the issue, you may have to add Rakuten Kobo to your partner account.
If you sign in to Kobo using a Facebook or Apple account:
- You must link your account with Rakuten Kobo. To link your account, sign in to Kobo using your Facebook, Apple, or Google account, and then follow the steps below.
To add Rakuten Kobo to your partner account:
- Go to https://www.kobo.com/accountsettings
- Under 'Other Sign-in Options', click More sign-in options.
- Scroll down to 'Rakuten' and click Add.
- Click Create Kobo account and follow the onscreen steps. After you've created your Kobo account, you can use iDeal to make purchases.
